Feed-in fluctuations are one of the major challenges for future power grids with a high share of renewables. Wind power is one of the main renewable energy sources. It features turbulent-like non-Gaussian statistics including correlations, extreme events, Kolmogorov power spectrum, and intermittent increments.
We present our results on the implications of progressive wind power integration on grid stability and frequency quality. These results are based on Kuramoto-like power grid models subjected to realistic wind feed-in and supported by in-house grid frequency measurements.
We show that intermittency is transferred into frequency fluctuations and significantly reduces frequency quality. This phenomenon is beyond the scope of electrical engineering up to now.
We conclude with an outlook on the integration of storage units into Kuramoto-like models and their potential with respect to frequency quality improvement.
