Confined colloids under planar shear

Robert Gernert:

In project B2 we aim to study the formation and control of dynamic patterns in a thin sheared film of magnetic colloids. To this end we will use dynamic density functional theory (DDFT) and computer simulations.

Starting point of the present talk is the derivation of the DDFT [1, 2] which describes the time evolution of the space-dependent particle density in a system of overdamped colloidal particles. We also present several DDFT results for interacting colloids driven by a constant force through a washboard potential (see [3] and poster of Dortje Schirok). In that system the resulting current can be manipulated by time-delayed feedback control.

We then discuss a recent extension of the DDFT method for systems under shear [4]. This method is based on a mean-field-approximation for the velocity in the convective term.

In another part of project B2, dense colloidal suspensions are studied via brownian dynamics simulation. First results are presented on the poster of Tarlan Vezirov.
