B5: Modelling and control of multiscale reaction-diffusion patterns and application to biomembranes and chemical reactions

Multiscale pattern formation refers to the simultaneous appearance of competing unstable modes with largely different wavelengths typically reflecting competing mechanisms of self-organization. Examples include lipid domains in biomembranes, chemical patterns in microemulsions and surface reactions affected by promotors. We aim to construct models for multiscale pattern formation, analyse their behavior and develop strategies to control the spatio-temporal dynamics in such systems both for generic simple models and realistic descriptions of applications. Methods include numerical simulations, homogenization and bifurcation analysis.
